Speaker Topic:
Heliophysics – the study of how our Sun and its interactions shape the space around us – drives everything from the dancing aurora to atmospheric dynamics and even the warmth we feel under the Arizona sun. Join us as we explore the intricate relation between our home planet and the Sun’s energy, uncovering the immense power of space weather and the delicate processes that make our atmosphere unique.
Abstract:
Astrophysics PhD student Tyler Karasinski, from the Near-Earth Space Sensing group (NESSie) at Arizona State University, joins us to discuss ongoing research initiatives and places where we’re still in the dark regarding our own neighborhood of the solar system. We’ll also take a deep dive into the NESSie Gravity Wave Zoo project, where you can get hands-on with real scientific data. Learn how near-infrared imaging captures atmospheric waves high above Alaska’s last frontier, revealing the ocean-like tides and motions that shape our skies.
